Nairobi Water Queens have shifted their focus in retaining the East and Central Africa Club Championship title in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania after setting an unassailable in the local league.
Over the weekend, Nairobi Water beat their closest rivals Ulinzi Sharks (30-26) at Nyayo Stadium to remain unbeaten with two matches remaining.
“After that tough win over Sharks, the league title is as good as in the bag,” said coach Jack Ochieng. “My focus is now on Dar es Salaam.”
Ochieng remains optimistic of successfully defending the regional crown he won in Rwanda, counting on the nine national team players in his stable.
Nairobi Water’s dominance has seen them win eight league and four regional championships across the various cities of Nairobi, Arusha, Zanzibar City and Kigali.
Men’s champions, National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), who won the Kenya Handball Federation title over the weekend, are also preparing for the Dar tournament.
The other team headed for Dar are the self-supporting Black Mamba, whose coach Martin Ochieng, remains optimistic of getting a sponsor to facilitate the trip.
“We have made appeals from well-wishers to enable us travel to Dar. With days flying fast, we remain hopeful,” he said.
